Homeschool Horsemanship Program
Graymour Stables offers group Homeschool Horsemanship classes for ages 6 and up. Students will learn both written and practical skills in a hands-on, custom-tailored environment where they can advance at their own pace. Class schedueles are designed to suit your individual needs. In order to allow more one-on-one time with students and offer the best experience possible, classes are limited to 5 students per class.
For 2 hours each week in affordable, 10-week programs, students will participate in 1 hour of classroom work with 1 hour of hands-on, riding activities. Our classes are taught by knowledgeable, passionate horsewomen with years of experience. Our program teaches riding skills as well as general horsemanship, teaching students how to keep both themselves and their horses safe. At the end of each session, students get to go on a trail ride!
About the Classes: What We Teach
Our classes are divided into 4 levels of advancement. Each level is based on the information and requirements laid out by the CHA, or Certified Horsemanship Association, in their manuals of effective horsemanship. In addition to the framework laid out by the CHA, our specialized program also features custom-designed curriculum written by our instructors specially for our classes.
From day 1, our instructors aim to teach safe, effective and practical horsemanship. Beginners focus on the basic necessities of riding, such as safety, finding one's center of balance, reading equine body language, and proper grooming. Early lessons are designed to teach students what they need to know about the basics of horseback riding quickly while also building the confidence and skills necessary to tackle later challenges.
Higher level classes build upon previous lessons while teaching students practical skills that every horseperson should know, such as how to recognize potential early symptoms of equine illnesses, what papers and permits are necessary to travel across state lines with a horse, what precautions to take in extreme weather, and much, much more.
By the end of all 4 levels, students should know everything they need to ride safely and properly even without supervision, and have many of the skills they will need to purchase and care for a horse of their own if they choose to buy or lease. Many competition skills are also taught should students choose to compete in other equestrian events throughout the country. (Our classes also make fantastic scouting opportunities for badges, loops or pins!)
Each 10-week course is $200 per student. Payment can be divided into two payments of $100, four payments of $50, or on an individual per-lesson basis of $20. All sessions are 10 weeks except Level I, which is 12 weeks and 240$.
Level 1 is designed to be a 12-week beginner course, while other levels usually take more than 10 weeks to complete. Students are tested at the end of each 10 weeks, and given awards and certificates. On average, most Level 2 students take at least 3 10-week sessions to complete the Level 2 requirements, while Levels 3 and 4 may take longer depending upon the student.
As mentioned above, classes are limited in size. To reserve your spot or for more information, please e-mail us or call 843-810-9141.
Note: Classes are stopped during the summer months due to weather. However, while it is too hot to do many of the activities in our homeschool classes, we do have summer camps!
